Jahalam spent the last three years behind bars instead of the real accused Abu Salek on charges of loan fraud and embezzlement of Tk 185 million from Sonali Bank Limited. The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) said it’s not responsible for the wrongful imprisonment of Jahalam, who served three years in prison on charges of loan fraud and embezzlement of Tk 185 million from Sonali Bank Limited.
In a report filed with the High Court on Tuesday (Mar 5), the graft watchdog held the bank responsible for the fiasco.
It said that loans are given based on records from Bangladesh Bank and Sonali Bank and the investigators played no part in it.
ACC counsel Khurshid Alam Khan said that the report sought to make Bangladesh Bank, Sonali Bank, UCBL and City Bank parties in the matter.
Saying that the hearing of a rule on the matter will take place on Wednesday (Mar 6), he added, “The court will decide who’s responsible after hearing the matter.”
Jahalam was arrested in 2016 after he was mistaken for one Abu Salek who was accused in 33 cases filed by the ACC over loan fraud and embezzling nearly Tk185 million from Sonali Bank.
The ACC summoned jute mill worker Jahalam over the matter five years ago through a letter sent to his Tangail residence. He was then produced in court where he pleaded innocent saying that he was not Salek.
He was released on Feb 4 day after it was brought to the HC’s attention that he was serving time instead of Salek.
