The High Court has issued a rule asking authorities why the family of newspaper employee Nazim Uddin, who was killed in a race between two buses in Dhaka, will not be compensated by Tk 10 million.
The home secretary, the chairman and managing director of BRTA, Bangladesh Police chief, Dhaka metro police commissioner and owners of Sraban Paribahan and Manjil Paribahan and others concerned have been ordered to respond.
In its suo motu rule on Tuesday, the bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Haque told the respondents to explain within 10 days.
A senior advertising executive of English daily Dhaka Tribune, Nazim Uddin was killed on Thursday (May 17), when a bus hit his motorcycle on the Mayor Hanif Flyover in the capital.
The court’s order came after lawyer Golam Mustafa presented media reports on the 32-year-old’s death before the court on Tuesday.
“After seeing the reports, I felt it was my duty to bring the court’s attention to the matter,” he told the media after the hearing.
The same High Court bench had ordered Tk 10 million compensation to the family of Titumir College student Rajib Hossain, who had lost a hand before succumbing to severe head injuries sustained after two buses crashed in capital Dhaka.
On Tuesday, the Appellate Division froze the order and instructed the High Court to form an independent and impartial committee to found who were responsible for the accident.
