BCL clashes injure 15 at Jagannath University

The clashes began at around 11am on Sunday (Feb 3), continued in phases and lasted till 2pm.As many as 15 people including an assistant proctor Jagannath University (JnU) have been injured in factional clashes between two groups of JnU Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) unit, students' wing of ruling Awami League.
In an immediate action, the central BCL suspended its JnU unit following the clashes.
The clashes broke out between the groups led by JnU BCL president Tarikul Islam and general secretary Sheikh Zainul Abedin over establishing supremacy on the campus.
The clashes began at around 11am on Sunday (Feb 3), continued in phases and lasted till 2pm.
Campus sources said, on Jan 31, supporters of Tarikul-group beat Tuhin, who was loyal to secretary Zainul, over having an affair.
In retaliation, supporters of Zainul-group beat Nayan and Rifat of Tarikul-group on Sunday that broke the clashes.
Later, both groups swept on each other with locally made weapons including hockey sticks and machetes leaving 15 people injured from both sides.
Assistant Proctor Shahin Alam also sustained injuries after brick chips hit on his head.
Chase and counter-chase took places. Several blasts of crude bombs were heard during the clashes.
Additional police forces have been deployed as tensed situation prevailed on the campus.
When Bangla Tribune contacted JnU Proctor Nur Mohammad, Tarikul and Zainul over the phone, none of them answered the call.
Admitting the incident, Kotwali police OC Mashiur Rahman said, “If the university administration lodges any complaint we will act upon then.”
BCL action
The central BCL suspended it the JnU unit and formed a probe committee to investigate into the Sunday’s incidents.
All activities of JnU unit has been suspended as its leaders failed to maintain stability and congenial atmospheres on the campus and lacked sincerity to upheld the party discipline,” says a statement signed by BCL president Rezanul Huq Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Robani.
A four-member probe committee led by BCL central leader Sohan Khan has also been formed to further investigate into the incidents, it reads.
