Woman trying to 'buy' newborn detained

Representational imageA woman was detained while allegedly trying to buy a two-day old baby from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday (Jan 30) evening, said DMCH police camp Inspector Md Baccu Mia.

The arrestee has been identified as 28-year-old Sonia.

Josna Begum, mother of the baby boy, told the media that she was admitted to DMCH two days ago and gave birth to a baby boy on Tuesday (Jan 29).
Witnesses said that Josna contacted to Sonia on Wenesday (Jan 30) morning over the phone to come to the hospital to take the new born away. Later, Sonia came to the hospital and stayed with to Josna till evening. Then Sonia tried to take away the baby when Josna’s husband called the hospital security members and Sonia was held and later, she was handed over to Shahbag police.

Upon primary interrogation, Sonia told police that Josna promised her the baby in exchange of Tk 50,000 around six months back, and she had paid Tk 3,000 in advance. But now, since Josna was refusing to give up the baby, she tried to take him away.

Police said that Sonia was detained after Josna’s husband Tuku Mia informed over the matter to hospital Ansar members.

Later, Sonia was handed over to Shahbag police.
