RMG workers end Dhaka-Mymensingh highway blockade

The RMG workers blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway have ended their two day protest demanding arrears and rise in minimum wages.
They cleared out of the highway on Monday (Jan 7) afternoon, ending the demonstrations where workers from various garments factories took part. Nipa Group Limited Chairman Khasru Chowdhury called on the protestors to go back home saying, “You will be paid according to the government approved wage board.”
He pledged to shut down his factory should he fail to do so and added that should such a day come, the workers will be paid a month’s salary in advance.
Uttara Police Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nabid Kamal Shoibal said that the police will keep an eye on whether the workers are getting paid according to the wage board.
“We won’t remain by your side if you continue vandalizing. The garments owners are here to ensure that you get paid according to the wage board.”
Shoibal called for the workers to work out any issues with the authority through negotiations.
Regarding the torching of vehicles and vandalizing, the workers said, that the drivers attacked them but they are unaware of who torched the vehicles.
They said that a probe will reveal the perpetrators.
On Sunday (Jan 6), the garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway for five hours pressing their demands.
They took to the streets again on Monday (Jan 7) morning .
The workers called off the blockaded after the factory owners assured them of implementing the new wage board.
