A writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) challenging the victory of Rashed Khan Menon at Dhaka-8 constituency in the Dec 30 national election.
Advocate Yunus Ali Akond, who also contested the Dhaka-8 seat on Jatiya Party ticket, filed the petition on Tuesday (Jan 1).
The petition sought HC directive upon the Election Commission (EC) to cancel the result of the constituency citing irregularities.
In the petition, Akond also prayed to the HC to order the EC not to include Menon’s name in the gazette notification.
Menon, who is the chief of Workers Party of Bangladesh, was contested the polls from Awami League-led 14-party alliance.
Speaking to media, Akond said “Voters couldn’t cast their ballots as Menon’s agents stuffed the ballots.
“I complained to the EC but they took no steps, which violates Article 66 of the Constitution,” he said.
Akond said, “Besides, Memon holds an ‘office of profit’ when contested the polls, which violates the Section 20 of the Representation of People Order (RPO).
“He (Menon) also used AL President Hasina’s images on his campaign posters violating the 2008 electoral code of conducts.
The HC may hear the petition on Wednesday (Jan 3), Akond added.
