Lightning kills 11 in 4 districtsAt least 11 people were killed in lightning strikes in Habiganj, Nilphamari, Rajshahi and Jamalpur of the country on Wednesday (May 9).
Of them, six people were killed in Habiganj, two each in Nilphamari and Rajshahi and another one in Jamalpur.
In Habiganj, six farmers were killed and nine others injured by lightning strikes while they were harvesting in a paddy field at different haors in Baniachong, Nabiganj, Lakhai and Madhabpur upazilas of the district, BSS district correspondent said.
In Nilphamari, two people were killed when lightning struck them at Dimla upazila in the morning.
Police said the lightning followed by a rainstorm hit housewife Asma Begum, 50, a resident of Balagram-Shalongram of the upazila, when she was in the yard of her house. She died on the spot.
In Rajshahi, two people including a college student were killed on the spot and two others sustained injuries when they were hit by thunderbolts in Tanore Upazila of the district this noon, locals said.
Rejaul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Tanore Police Station, said Ansar Ali accompanied by some other farmers fall prey to the thunderbolt strike when they were harvesting paddy.
On the other hand, college student Shohag came under the hit while he was irrigating their farming field.
In Jamalpur, A man was killed by lightning in Dewanganj upazila in the district this morning.
The victim was identified as Habibur Rahman, 47, son of late Abdul Majid at village Moulavir Char in Char Amkhawa Union in Dewanganj upazila.
