SC upholds Khaleda’s bail in Cumilla arson case

Former PM and BNP chief Khaleda Zia The Appellate Division has upheld the bail of BNP Chief Khaleda Zia in the Cumilla arson case filed under the Special Powers Act.
An appeal bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain gave the order on Thursday (Dec 6). The bench has also fixed Dec 13 as the next hearing date for the case.
On Sept 13, Khaleda moved the High Court (HC) challenging the trial court’s order denying her bail.
On Nov 28, the HC bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and SM Mozibur Rahman granted her bail.
The state later moved the apex court seeking a stay order on her bail after which a full appeal bench fixed the hearing date as Dec 6.
The former prime minister stands accused of ordering the firebombing of a bus in Cumilla during a countrywide blockade of roads, railway and waterways in 2015.
The attack left eight people dead and another 22 injured.
Khaleda is currently serving a 10-year term in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case in and is also being tried in the Naiko graft case.
