The police will from cells across all districts and Upazilas in the country to curb rumours ahead of the 11th Parliamentary Election slated for Dec 30.
“The aims to prevent violence and fact check rumours for journalists,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam said on Saturday (Dec 1).
Speaking at a roundtable discussion in the city, Islam said, “We apprehend of rumours to incite violence during the pre-polls season,” said Islam, who heads the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of the DMP.
Urging the media not to solely depend on police for reports, the senior police officer said, “Please do verify from your sources before reporting as rumours can trigger violence.”
