The Muktangon Park near Paltan GPO now has public toilet facilities for both men and women. However, many complain that the fees taken for the toilet service are high. As part of a demand for clean and advanced public toilets, this was inaugurated by city corporation mayor, Sayeed Khokon, on Jan 5 last.
To use the toilet and to take a bath, the rates are Tk 5 and Tk 10 respectively and drinking water is Tk 1. However, no charge is taken for ablutions for prayer. The toilets are clean and not damp. There are a total of twelve toilets, six for men and six for women.
People coming to use the facilities have to take off their shoes and wear rubber sandals inside. The toilets remain open 24 hours.
There is also a locker facility which is Tk 5. First one has to deposit Tk 30 and Once the item kept in the locker is collected, Tk 25 is refunded while Tk 5 is kept as the locker fee.
While the toilets offer clean services to many, local hawkers feel the rates are a bit high.
Ticket seller of the toilet, Parul Begum, says, “I have been working here for three months and sometimes we get fifty women per day.”
We give ten to fifteen minutes for a shower, she added.
Sometimes, a few male users do not want to pay which results in an argument, she added.
