Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia.Police have arrested senior BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mia hours after the court convicted him of concealing wealth information in a case filed 14 years ago.
The Detective Branch detained him around 6.30pm on Tuesday (Nov 20) from his home at Dhaka’s Eskaton, its Additional Commissioner Golam Saklain told Bangla Tribune.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka special judge’s court sentenced the former minister to three years in jail and fined by Tk 50,000, failing to pay which will result to another three months behind the bars.
The verdict was announced in absence of Mia, a member of BNP’s policymaking National Standing Committee, when the court issued a warrant against him.
According to the case documents, the ACC served a notice on Mia to submit his wealth information on Apr 7, 2001.
In January 2014, the ACC filed a case with Uttara Police after he failed to submit the wealth information by the deadline.
On Nov 30 the same year, the graft watchdog submitted the charges to the court and the trial kicked off in 2017 when the BNP leader was indicted.
