Police have detained seven people including three female as they tried to demonstrate demanding the implementation of a parliamentary committee’s recommendation for raising age limit for entry to government jobs.
The detention was made from the capital’s Shahbagh intersection on Saturday (Nov 3).
Witnesses said leaders and activists of Bangladesh General Students Rights Council gathered on the Public Library premises to hold a rally.
But, police advised them to leave the area on security ground.
Security has been beefed up surrounding Suhrawardy Udyan as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to a programme there on Sunday (Nov 3).
As the protesters insisted they would hold a rally on the Shaeed Minar, police opened the library’s main entrance and held seven of them on the spot.
A witness, however, claimed 15- 20 people have been held.
The Council warned of continuing the programme until the release of the detainees.
“Our protest will continue until the detainees walk free,” Imtiaj Hossain, spokesperson of the demonstrators, told Bangla Tribune.
Shahbagh police OC Abul Hasan confirmed the detention saying, “There is no permission for gathering at Shabagh due to the PM’s Sunday programme.
“Besides, the demonstrators had no permission to hold programme,” Hasan added.
On Sept 10, the parliamentary standing committee on the public administration ministry recommended increasing the age limit for entering government jobs to 35.
At present, the age limit for civil service is 30.
