The High Court has upheld death sentences for the three convicts in the 2010 murder of ATN Bangla senior cameraman Shafiqul Islam Mithu.
The bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam gave its decision on Wednesday (Oct 31) after hearing the appeals by the convicts and the death references.
On the night of May 8, 2010, Shafiqul Islam, 40, was kidnapped while on his way to Kawran Bazar office from his Kawla residence. His body was found in an area under Turag police station the next day.
In October the same year, police pressed charges against Mohammad Ratan, Mohammat Sujan, Mohammad Rahat and Mohammad Raju.
Of them, Rahat was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police. Others gave confessional statements.
In 2012, the court indicted the three suspects and in February 2013, Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman awarded them the death penalty.
