Pro- BNP lawyers have boycotted the Supreme Court on Wednesday protesting the verdict doubling BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s jail term in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Despite the boycott by Supreme Court Bar Association, dominated by BNP supported lawyers, work is underway at both top court’s High Court Division and Appellate Division.
Bar Association President Advocate Zainul Abedin and Secretary Barrister KM Mahbubuddin Khokon began the boycott around 9:00am.
As part of their protest, they locked the Supreme Court main entrance. The demonstration continued till 1pm.
Over the locking of the connecting paths, an altercation took place between pro-BNP and pro-AL lawyers.
Compared to other days, presence of lawyers at the court premises was sparse.
On Tuesday (Oct 30), The High Court scaled up the jail term for Khaleda to 10 years from five in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Later, calling the verdict “illegal” Supreme-Court Bar Association announced the boycott of Supreme Court.
