As a result, Maya will be acquitted, said his lawyers.

The verdict was given by a join bench comprising justices, Md Nazrul Islam Talukdar and KM Hafizul Alam.

Maya’s lawyer, Sayeed Ahmed, Raza, said, “The High court accepted appeal of Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya as ACC failed to prove the complaint lodged against him.”

Now he is free and does not have any restrictions from taking part in the upcoming elections, the legal counsel added.

In June, 2007, ACC assistant director, Nurul Alam, lodged a case against Maya in Sutrapur thana for illegally amassing Tk 2.9 million.

Later, on Feb 14, 2008, a special court passed a verdict of 13 years imprisonment and fine for Maya.

Through an appeal made in 2010, the high court revoked the jail sentence, which was overturned in 2015 by the appellate division led by former chief justice, S K Sinha.

At the same time, orders were given for appeal hearing which was eventually dismissed.
