TIB A colossal Tk 310 million is transacted illegally every year at Mangla port and Burimari land port, says Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
In a report published on Sunday, it claimed that no service is provided at the ports without bribe.
The amount of illegal transaction at the Burimari land port alone for the 2016-17 fiscal year was Tk 104.4 million.
Land port authorities and workers pocketed almost Tk 60 million of that money.
The scenario is similar at Mongla port.
According to TIB’s report, the importers have to pay a bribe of approximately Tk 35,700 against each bill of entry to the customs in Mongla.
In total, Mongla port and customs house authorities collectively pocket an approximate Tk 138.3 million of illegal money.
“Automation and one-stop services are halted at the ports on purpose but they must be restarted again if we are to fight such blatant corruption” said TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said at the launching ceremony.
He added that corruption of this magnitude was worrying and proper use of the current infrastructure of the ports must be made to ensure transparent operations.
