The city is seeing an alarming rise of Dengue patients; already, 4357 persons have been admitted to the hospital with Dengue fever and so far, 14 persons have died. According to information from the National Health Crisis Management Centre and Control Room, on 18 September, 65 patients have been admitted to the hospital. The number was 49 the day before.
The highest number of death from Dengue was 93 in 2000 while eight people died last year.
The disseminated health information states that Dengue and Chikungunya are spread by Aedes mosquitoes and those suffering usually recover with treatment; however, hemorrhagic Dengue is deadly.
Director of BSMMU Abdullah Harun told Bangla Tribune: “We have given treatment to 33 Dengue patients and, at the moment, there’s isn’t any patient with Dengue at the hospital.”
Director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital AKM Nasiruddin told Bangla Tribune: “Between Sept 1 and 18, a total of 145 patients were admitted and 88 have been discharged with two deaths.”
Currently, there are 55 patients taking treatment at the hospital, he said.
“Since last January, 418 patients got admitted with 360 patients already discharged with three deaths.”
Shahid Suhrawardy Hospital Director Uttam Barua told Bangla Tribune “At present, we have 31 patients at the hospital. Since January we admitted 240 patients and did not have any deaths.”
Patients who have recovered from Dengue feel that instead of just asking people to be aware, the administration has to be more stringent in tackling the menace.
The most complicated thing is when one unit platelet has to be made from blood taken from four persons, say relatives of patients.
Meanwhile, Health Directorate chief Abul Kalam Azad told Bangla Tribune: “If there isn’t any more rain then the prevalence of Dengue will decline.”
The Dengue season is between June and October.
