HC orders closure of 14 unlicensed hospitals in capital

Representational imageHigh Court has given an order to close down 14 hospitals in the capital's Mohammadpur, operating without licence.

The order came on Tuesday (Sept 11) following a writ hearing, from an HC bench, comprising justices Sheikh Hassan Arif and Ahmed Sohel.

Hearing on behalf of writ appeal was done by advocate Manzill Murshid.

Later, Morshed said, “Last April, a newspaper report was published on hospitals in Mohammadpur, operating without licence; based on that, we filed a writ, keeping people’s welfare in mind.”

The order for immediate closure has been sent to health directorate and the executive magistrate of RAB.

High Court has also issued a rule asking why legal steps should not be taken against people operating such unaccredited institutions.

Health secretary, DG of the health directorate, police commissioner, OC of Mohammadpur thana, and RAB’s executive magistrate have been asked to respond to the ruling.

On Apr 20 last, a report on illegal hospitals was published and a writ was lodged on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The name of the hospitals are: BDM Hospital, Shebika General Hospital & Diagnostic Center, Janasheba Nursing Home & Daignostic Centre, Life Care Nursing Home, Royal Multispeciality Hospital, Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah Manoshik and Madokashakto Hospital, Monomita Mental Hospital,  Plasma Medical services Ltd, Shefa Hospital & Diagnostic Center, Islamia Mental Hospital, Macca Madina General Hospital & Diagnostic Center, New Welcare Hospital, Bangladesh Trauma Specialized Hospital.
