Take actions to stop ragging on campus: UGC to JU

The UCG hols a meeting on Tuesday (Sept 4) with its Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan in the chair.The University Grants Commission has instructed the Jahangirnagar University authorities to take necessary measures to stop ragging on its campus.
The regulatory body also asked the university to punish its students who have been found guilty of ragging others.
The instructions came after the UCG held a meeting on Tuesday (Sept 4) with its Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan in the chair.
“We’ve discussed on the effective measures to stop ragging on JU campus at the today’s (Tuesday) meeting. The university authorities also agreed with us,” Mannan told Bangla Tribune.
Earlier, the UGC formed a probe committee following the instruction from the Prime Minister’s Office after a JU student become victim of ragging in February this year.
Led by UGC Member Prof Yusuf Ali Molla, the committee filed its report on Tuesday and recommended for possible steps to end ragging on the campus.
On the possible steps, an UGC official, who attended the meeting, said, “The Commission asked to raise awareness among the JU students as well as warn them of tougher punishment for ragging.
“The JU hall administrations were also asked to go rigid in punishing students who will be found guilty of ragging others,” said the official, who preferred to go unnamed.
JU VC Farzana Islam, who was also present in the meeting, said, “The university administration will take effective measures to stop ragging and other illegal activities on the campus.”
“This incident won’t be repeated in future,” she vowed.
