Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) authorities on a press conference today (April 2)The Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has urged the media to approach the prison authorities to get briefed on BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s health condition.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, DMCH Deputy Director Shah Alam Talukder said the media should expect the jail authorities to brief on the former prime minister as “she is not a patient at the hospital”.

“We formed a four-strong medical panel after the jail authorities wrote us. The doctors examined Khaleda Zia, but yet to file the medical report. So, we cannot provide any details at this moment,” he said.

On Sunday, the medical team — comprising of Orthopedics specialist Md Shamsuzzaman, Neurologist Mansur Habib, Medicine department’s Md Titu Mia and Physical Medicine department’s Soheli Rahman—went to the prison and examined the BNP chief for an hour.

Speaking to Bangla Tribune on Sunday, Shamsuzzaman described Khaleda’s condition as ‘not that bad’.

“We have examined her, checked whether the medicines she takes are all right. Her condition is not that bad, but she has several problems,” he said before adding that the DMCH director will brief the media.

A former prime minister, Khaleda has been sentenced to five years in prison after the court found her guilty of misappropriating foreign funds donated to the Zia Orphanage Trust.

The 72-year-old is serving her sentence at the old jailhouse on Nazimuddin Road in Old Dhaka since Feb 8, when a special judge’s court found her guilty of criminal breach of trust by a public servant under the Bangladesh Penal Code.
