The apex court will hear the governments’ petition seeking stay order on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail in a defamation case over derogatory remarks on the number of martyrs in the Liberation War on Oct 1.
Chamber Court Justice Hasan Foez Siddique on Thursday sent the government’s petition to the full bench of Appellate Division for hearing.
Advocate A J Mohammad Ali represented Khaleda while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved the petitions for the state.
Earlier on Aug 13, Khaleda was granted a six months bail by the The High Court. The HC bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Kashefa Hussain passed the order.
Khaleda’s counsels moved to the HC after the Narail District and Sessions Court denied the bail plea on Aug 5.
On Dec 21, 2015, Khaleda raised questions about the actual number of Liberation War martyrs during a rally in the capital.
She also alleged Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (not mentioning the name) ‘longed for the prime ministers' post of Pakistan; he didn't want a sovereign Bangladesh.’
Reacting over the Khaleda's remarks, Raihan Farooque Imam of Narail filed a case with the Cognisance Court on Dec 24, 2015.
