Ignoring calls by the city corporation, Dhaka residents have slaughtered their sacrificial animals on the streets.
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) designated nearly 800 spots across the capital this year in an effort to streamline the herculean waste management process.
According to rough estimates, nearly half a million animals will be slaughtered in Dhaka this year marking the Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest festivals of Muslims.
Ahead of the Eid, the DNCC said it designated 183 spots and the DSCC 602 spots. On Wednesday, almost all of the spots across the capital were either found empty or being used as cow sheds.
Not a single animal was slaughtered at the designated spot for Shegunbagicha residents.
The city corporation cleaners assigned to the spot said they had all preparations, but no one came with. They said they have requested several residents, but it went in vain. Everyone went for the street in front of their homes.
Shegungbagicha resident Hazi Giasuddin said the spot was too dirty as it was used as a cow shed for the last few days.
“Moreover, everyone was doing it on the street, so we did as well. But the residents have decided to keep the waste at a designated spot to facilitate the cleaners,” he told Bangla Tribune.Cows were found at slaughtering spot in Bangla Motor area on Wednesday.
Locals said those who will slaughter their animals on Thursday or Friday are using it as a cow shed.
It was the same across several neighbourhoods in the city including Banasree, Malibagh, Maghbazar. Eskaton, Paltan, Gulistan, Old Dhaka, Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Banani.
But what is more horrifying is improper disposal of animal waste— dumping it on the streets and in many cases blocking the sewerage system. With slaughtering of around 475,000 cattle this year, some 25,000 tonnes of extra waste will pile up in the capital, Dhaka South Mayor Sayeed Khokon told the media earlier this week.
Since the city authorities began designating slaughter spots in Dhaka a few years ago, the city residents have violated their instructions every year, without fail.
This year, mayors of Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong urged the city residents to use the slaughter spots and avoid using the roads to keep the cities clean.
