After the final approval of the Road Transport Law- 2018, the labour unions and transport owners’ association have taken some decision to bring a semblance of discipline to the sector.
These include checking permits before giving permission to drive, verifying papers of all vehicles every day before they leave terminal plus ending contract based driving,
They also took decision not to allow drivers with addiction problems to drive and stop the practice of selling tickets inside the bus.
On Wednesday, the proposed changes were disclosed by General Secretary of Dhaka transport owners’ association, Khondokar Enayetullah.
Lauding the new laws, he added: “we support his but some of the fines are exorbitant and we will propose some changes,”
Whether the government accepts the amendments or not, we support the new transport law, he stated.
“No car will run on contract because, under this system, there is pressure to get a specified number of passengers which triggers competition.”
If any company breaches this resolution then we shall make recommendations for their licences to be cancelled, came the unequivocal remark from the transport union leader.
He further said that every month, a discussion plus awareness building session will be held about the perils of drug use among drivers.
These measures are not temporary, assured Enayetullah, adding: “owners will be given up to Sep 30 to upgrade ramshackle vehicles.”
Once the selling of tickets in the bus is stopped there won’t be an altercation between passengers and the helpers, he felt.
Enayeutullah also requested ticket counters by the road to stop the practice of contract based driving.
