Dhaka normal after 9-day convulsions

BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainAfter a nine-day-long demonstration of students for safe roads, the capital Dhaka has returned to the normalcy on Tuesday. Public transports are seen running on the roads though they are fewer in number.

Police have been deployed in different roads in the city to avoid further trouble and to maintain sound law and order in the capital.

Educational institutions are back to their normal routine. Traffic police were seen checking the vehicle papers and licences on the roads. A mobile team of Dhaka Metropolitan police, led by Executive Magistrate Moshiur Rahman, and five Bangladesh Road and Transport Authority (BRTA) mobile courts have been deployed in the capital. BRTA Deputy Director, Masud Alam, said: “BRTA is operating five mobile courts in the capital to avoid mismanagements on the streets.”

BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainRamna police Deputy Commissioner, Maruf Hossain Sardar, said, “Police have been deployed in different areas of the capital for a smooth law and order scenario and to ensure safe roads for the general people.”

On Sunday, (July 29), two college students, Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, were killed as a bus ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road in the capital. Following the accident, agitated college students took to the street, torched a Jabel e Noor bus and vandalized several others.

Later, till 6 August, demanding safe roads, students from all over the country protested on the roads, checked driving licences and, at one point the movement descended into anarchy and skirmishes.
