“We are in discussion with the government on whom to test, how to test, and what to do with the report,” said AKM Tariful Islam Khan, media manager of communications at ICDDR,B on Monday (Mar 30).
Despite the fact that icddr,b has been allowed to conduct tests, the testing mechanism and the process between government and the ICDDR,B is yet to be finalized, said an ICDDR,B official.
“The ICDDR,B may provide lab support to the government, instead of providing testing facilities to the general people,” he said.
As of March 28, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR) was the sole authority to test the suspects.
With the new addition, along with ICDDR,B, three other institutions in Dhaka – Institute of Public Health, Dhaka Shishu Hospital, and IEDCR are conducting the tests for the coronavirus suspects.
Meanwhile, the IEDCR has confirmed that one more person has been infected with coronavirus in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the total infected in the country to 49.
Bangladesh has so far confirmed five deaths and 19 recoveries.
The fast spreading coronavirus, which was first reported in China's Wuhan, has infected 722,196 people and claimed 33,976 lives till 10am on Monday, according to worldometer.info.
Globally, a total of 151,766 infected people have also recovered from Covid-19, a pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO).
