Bangabandhu thanked USSR

Bangladesh Chhatra League observed revolutionary day on Mar 3, 1972 and student leaders recalled Bangabandhu’s warning made on Mar 3, 1971 when he had said: “People pay tax to run the country, not to get shot at.”

On this day in 1972, firebrand student leader Shahjahan Siraj talked of the glory of the revolution day; independence was declared on Mar 3 at the presence of Bangabandhu and he criticized the university authority for forcibly sending many teachers of the university into holiday.

On this day, Bangabandhu also said: “Even if I am not here, the blood of the Bengalis will not be spent in vain; all Bengalis will have to run the movement without fear.”

On this day in 1972, Chhatra League declared that it will also carry out constrictive criticism of the government. President of Bangladesh Chhatra League Nur e Alam Siddiqui and ASM Abdur Rab were also present. ASM Abdur Rab said: “No Urdu or Hindi film will be allowed in Bangladesh.”

On this day, Bangabandhu was touring USSR and reached Leningrad from Moscow and was welcomed by chairman of USSR, Alexander.

Supreme of the USSR Nikolai Podgorny welcomed Bangabandhu and this time foreign minister Abdus Samad Azad, foreign secretary SA Karim and Bangladesh ambassador to USSR Shamsur Rahman were present.

Bangabandhu expressed profound gratitude for the support given by the USSR and her people during the liberation war.

In the country, people were grappling with the high price of essentials with rice selling for Tk 60 per mound.
