Govt to distribute 300,000 family silos in Mujib Year

On occasion of the Mujib Year, the government will construct and distribute family silos in disaster prone areas. The ministry of food has already started to work in this regard.
Earlier, the government distributed family silos at Tk 80 each among 500,000 poor families in 63 upazilas of 19 districts.
The prime minister inaugurated the family silo through video conference on May 6, 2018. The government has also taken the initiative to construct 200 silos with 5000 tonne capacity.
Keeping the Mujib Year in focus, the ministry of food has taken many initiatives, including storing of food using the digital system, market monitoring, etc.
Projects have been taken to construct six food testing laboratories in six divisional cities – Barishal, Khulna, Sylhet Rangpur and Rajshahi.
Director General of the food department, Sarwar Mahmud, said: “The work of the silos will be done by the next one and a half years and an additional 200 silos will also be constructed with a capacity of 5000 tons.”
Currently, the country has 5 big silos, 13 central silos and 631 local silos with a total capacity of around 2 million tonne.
