FILE PHOTOIn different rivers of the southern part of the country, Hilsa is being caught in record numbers. Most are small in size but the fisherman are happy.
In the past, they spent idle time, but this year they are delighted with the abundant catch of Hilsa. This has had a positive impact on the price of the fish and the buyers are happy too.
The supply of Hilsa to the markets in Dhaka has risen.
A fisherman in Pirojpur, observes: “We do not lay nets during winter but this year is an exception.”
Another fisherman says: “Winter means idle time but not this year since we are catching plenty of fish.”
At the Mohipur non government fish distribution centre, supply of Hilsa has risen with 300 mounds of Hilsa arriving every day. At the markets in Dhaka, other fish may be available but buyers are showing interest in buying Hilsa.
State minister for fisheries and livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru said: “The production of Hilsa is much more this year during this season than in the past.”
“We are keeping an eye to ensure that fries are not being caught and district administration plus the police, coast guards have been kept on alert,” the state minister.
