Jan 29, 1972: Bangabandhu govt emphasises equal rights, secularism

On this day, Dainik Bangla published a report alluding to news agency ENA that the constitution of Bangladesh was almost ready with emphasis on equal rights, secularism, freedom of thought and religion.
It was decided that legal council will be unicameral with 350 members. The news also stated that the draft prepared by a committee led by the then law minister Kamal Hossain will be presented at the AL executive council.
After assessment it will be sent to the Gono Parishad, the report added.
In the unicameral legal council, 350 members will be elected for five years and the legal council will vote to elect a president and the state language will be Bangla. Those born in Bangladesh, or have parents who are born here or those who have spent five years in Bangladesh will be eligible to get citizenship.
Alluding to Bangabandhu’s interview given to AFP, Dainik Bangla added: “Pakistan has to grasp the reality and give formal recognition to Bangladesh. Re-establishing relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan will be more difficult than the resumption of relations between Germany and France after World War II.”
US senator of the Democrat Party, Stephenson came to Dhaka and he said: “The American people want to re-establish friendship with Bangladesh.”
He further said that the American people had always supported the efforts by other nations to establish democratic rights.
Giving interview to AFP, Bangabandhu said he believes in a socialist economic format.
As for internal policy, he added: “Bangladesh is a war ravaged country and cannot give promises to anyone unless I know that I have the capacity to fulfil the pledges made.”
He also said that there will be talks with India on Farakka, irrigation and power development.
Chief of army Muhammad Ataul Goni Osmani said in Sylhet: “The country is ruled by democratic laws and the army is committed to preserve the sovereignty of the nation.”
