Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has accused BNP of hatching conspiracy to make Dhaka city polls questionable.
“Sensing their defeat, BNP is hatching conspiracy to make Dhaka city corporation polls questionable . . . They (BNP) are chalking out blueprint to create a turmoil situation centering the election,” he told media while inaugurating a rally at Tejgaon in the capital, said an official release on Wednesday (Jan 29).
Dr Hasan, also the Awami League Joint-General Secretary, added: “With only few days left for the election to Dhaka South and North City Corporations, BNP is trying to make their ‘petrol bombers’ active.”
Chalachitra League, a cultural organization of film artists, brought out the procession at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in Tejgaon as part of its programme on celebrating the Mujib Year, reports BSS.
The information minister urged all to remain alert so that none can create any anarchy centering the upcoming polls slated for Feb 1.
Replying to a query of journalists, he said the election will be held in a free, fair and peaceful manner if the BNP doesn’t hamper the polls environment.
“You (newsmen) all know what they (BNP) have done in old Dhaka . . . They realized that people are not with them. So they are trying to thwart the polls’ environment in many ways,” Hasan added.
Referring to the recent by-poll in Chattogram-8 constituency, Dr Hasan said the by-election was held in a free, fair and neutral manner under the EC.
Similarly, the EC is pledge-bound to hold the elections to Dhaka south and north city corporations in the same way.
“The government will provide all out support to the Election Commission in holding the polls in a free, fair and neutral manner,” the minister added.
The information minister thanked all cultural personalities for participating in the rally welcoming the Mujib year. He also recalled the contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to establishing the country’s film industry.
The minister said, “The work of making a Bangladesh-India joint venture film on the occasion of Mujib Year is in progress and our prime target is to release the film on March next year.”
Eminent Cultural Personality Syed Hasan Imam, Film Actor Alamgir, Chalachitra League president Mirza Abdul Khaleque, President of Bangladesh Film Directors’ Association Mushfiqur Rahman Guljar and Actress Mousumi, among others, were present on the occasion.
