There is no level playing field within the Election Commission itself, alleged Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar.

He made the remarks while addressing a media call at his own offices on Sunday (Jan 26).

Responding to queries on Awami League’s allegation that he is serving BNP’s purpose, he said, “Those familiar with my history are well aware that I belong to a specific party.

“Any space for me to say anything during the Commission meetings has shrunk. We want to preserve the honour and freedom of the Election Commission and our work should reflect that,” he said.

He added that his proposals are ignored due to lack of majority. “There is no playing field within the Election Commission.”

Talukdar said that the responsibilities for the upcoming Dhaka City polls are not being carried out properly.

“In the three meetings since the polls schedule was announced, not once was the code of conduct, irregularities or complaints from candidates discussed,” he said before adding these issues are not in the agenda for the upcoming meeting either.

He said that four of his U-notes regarding the city polls have not been taken into account and no discussions were held either.

“I had asked for information on the complaints from the candidates to be presented within Jan 20. But it was ignored,” he added.

He said that if the complaints are ignored then the city polls will not be held properly and the Election Commission will be liable for that.
