Myanmar has to accept the International Court of Justice rule that ordered the country to take stepts to protect Rohingyas from genocide, says Information Minister Hasan Mahmud.
His remarks came on Saturday (Jan 25) at an event in Chattogram.
“There is no way for them to dismiss the order. It’s a historic rule,” he said before adding that it will increase pressure on Myanmar to take back the over one million Rohingyas who fled Rakhine and living in camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The Hague-based ICJ, the United Nations highest court on Thursday (Jan 23) ordered Myanmar to protect the Rohingya against further atrocities and preserve evidence of alleged crimes, after West African nation the Gambia launched a lawsuit in November accusing the country of genocide.
However, although the ruling is binding with no possibility of appeal, the court has no means of enforcing it.
