On Jan 10, 1972, Bangabandhu came back to the country to concentrate on the construction of the nation.
After returning to the newly independent country, Bangabandhu issued a stern warning to profiteers and racketeers saying “there’s no place for conspirators in this country.”
“Some traders are trying to inflate the prices of essentials and I want to tell them that you cannot do so and if you resort to unethical methods then your future will be bleak; those who exploit the market will face consequences.”
He also said that the government has decided to allot land to rehabilitate the destitute.
Independence means living with dignity; we will build a golden Bangladesh. The statement of Abu Sayeed Chowdhury clarified that the administration of the nation will be a symbiosis between democracy and socialism.
A decision to avoid all military alliances was also taken on this day, underlining neutrality, peaceful co-existence with fraternity towards all.
At a rally in Bashabo on Jan 16, finance minister Tajuddin Ahmed, said “on Mar 7 after Bangabandhu’s speech, general Yaha sent a message saying that more will be given to East Pakistan than asked and we instantly knew that this was a ruse.”
He also said that many foreign generals wondered with amazement as to how Bangababdhu, without being a military person, could lead a nation and motivate them towards war. On this day, it was revealed that after the Pakistan army surrendered, a sack full of human eyes was recovered at the office of collaborators’ force, Al Badar.
On this day, noted journalist ABM Musa was made director of BTV and Abdul Wahab, the news editor and managing editor of Morning News.
Front page of now-defunct Dainik Bangla on Jan 17, 1972From Dec 19, work began at all offices and the next day, a press note was issued banning transfer of money, gems, gold to Pakistan. On Dec 22, Latbhaban was renamed Bangabhaban.
At the first cabinet meeting held on Dec 23, decision was taken to make Bangla the state language while state bank was named Bangladesh Bank.
On Dec 29, Tajuddin Ahmed said “war criminals will be tried under international law.”
On Jan 2, the president and the prime minster declared that all religions will have equal freedom and there won’t be any religious minority. On Jan 3, A H M Kamruzzman declared the return of refugees from India and said “Tk 20 billion will be spent rehabilitating thirty million people.”
As per president’s order on Jan 11, a new government took oath the next day. Bangabandhu was prime minister and Abu Sayeed Chowdhury the president. Till 15 January, 15 countries gave recognition to Bangladesh.
