On Jan 15, 1972, the newly formed government observed a day of mourning for those who gave their lives in the war of independence.
The media of that period carry news about the decision to construct a national monument to pay respect to the martyrs. On this day in 1972, the flag was flown at half-mast and a black flag was hoisted.
All government officials wore black bands. The lead story of Dainik Bangla was on the day of mourning and it read: “Today, as citizens of a free nation, we recall those who were savagely killed by the invading Pakistani forces and their collaborators.”
On that day, several discussions were held on the significance of independence and future duties.
General secretary of Bangladesh AL, Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, called on everyone to observe the day with full respect. On this day, Bangabandhu expressed fear saying that conspiracy against the country is ongoing and all malicious efforts will be thwarted.
Addressing the workers and the people, he said: “I called on them to face the enemy and they did just that.”
“We have lost many Sheikh Mujibs in the war; the Pakistan army has destroyed everything. Now we must concentrate on reconstructing the country.”
Reflecting on the past, chief prosecutor of the ICT, Golam Arif Tipu, said: “We attained this country through the sacrifice of millions and even today when we think of the brutality unleashed by the Pakistani army, we shiver in terror.”
On Jan 15, 1972, a press note was issued which stated that all non- military bodies have been ordered to take measures against collaborators and perpetrators. Only the police will be authorized to carry out search and arrest operations.
During the independence struggle, India was Bangladesh’s biggest friend and their media also rallied for Bangladesh. When newsreader from India, Devdudal Banerjee came to Bangladesh, he was given a rousing welcome. At this time, many freedom fighters were present.
