He made the remarks during a training session of the Dhaka city polls returning and assistant returning officers on Wednesday (Dec 25).
“The Election Commission is by law independent but in reality it is captive to the voting process,” he said.
He said that the local representatives who are illegally elected have no commitment towards democracy or the people.
He said that the upcoming city corporation polls is one of the most important for the existing commission.
Addressing the election employees, he said that it is their duty to maintain a zero tolerance policy for anything that hinders a level playing field for the candidates.
“Your laxity in this regard will not be tolerated. If the allegations are proven, strict measures will be taken,” he said.
Talukdar said that the biggest challenge lies in achieving the trust of the voters as many have reservations regarding the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) that will be used in the city polls.
He added that the voters have nothing to worry about and voter turnout ensures an acceptable election.
“I have said it before; after the national election, the Dhaka city corporations polls is the most important,” he said before adding that everyone is looking forward to it.
