The Election Commission has fixed Jan 30 for voting in the elections to the Dhaka North and South city corporations.
On Sunday (Dec 22), Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the schedule for the polls.
According to it, aspirants have until Dec 31 to submit their nomination papers. The nominations will be verified on Jan 2 while the deadline for withdrawing from the race ends on Jan 9.
Voters will elect the mayors and councillors to the Dhaka North and South city corporations using electronic voting machines (EVMs) to cast ballots.
Election Commission Joint Secretary Abul Kashem has been appointed returning officer of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election, while another Joint Secretary Abdul Baten will assume the role of returning officer of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election.
Elections to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) were previously held on Apr 28, 2015.
The first meeting of the DNCC was held on May 14 and DSCC on May 17 the same year.
As per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, election has to be held within 180 days before the expiry of the term which starts from the day of the first meeting.
