Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen addressing an event in Dhaka on Wednesday (Dec 18).Dhaka wants to have faith in India’s assurances that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not affect Bangladesh in any way, says Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen.
“We told them that if any of our [Bangladeshi] citizens are staying illegally, let us know. We’ll take them back after verification,” he said on Wednesday (Dec 18) while addressing an event in Dhaka.
He added that the Indian government has assured they are not pushing-in anyone to Bangladesh.
The minister said that the neigbours are yet to inform Dhaka on how many illegal citizens are there.
Responding to queries on whether the Liberation War collaborators’ list fiasco will affect Bangladesh’s international image, he said, “the list should’ve been prepared before.”
Momen blamed the post-1975 governments for not taking the initiative and admitted that the recently-published list of 10,789 Razakars needs to be amended.
