International Migrants DayThe International Migrants Day-2019 is being observed on Wednesday (Dec 18) in the country in a befitting manner as elsewhere across the globe.
On Dec 4, 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed Dec 18 as the International Migrants Day.
On that day in 1990, the UN assembly adopted the International Convention on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and members of their families.
President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages greeting Bangladeshi migrants in different parts of the world on the occasion of the International Migrants Day, reports BSS.
To mark the day, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment has chalked out various programmes like other countries of the world.
The theme of the day in Bangladesh has been set as ‘Dakkho Hoye Bidesh Gele, Artho Samman Dui-e Mele”.
To mark the day, a colorful procession has been brought out from Manik Miah Avenue around 8am on Wednesday.
A daylong programme has been arranged at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center on Thursday (Dec 19) to mark the day.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend the function as the chief guest at 10am on that day.
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad will chair the first session of the programme while Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) President Benjir Ahmed, MP and International Organization for Migration (IOM) Bangladesh Mission Chief Giorgi Gigauri will attend it as special guests.
The programmes of the migrants day will include awarding of commercial important persons status to 42 non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) of 14 countries in three categories, inauguration of life insurance programme for intending workers who will go abroad, scholarship giving to meritorious children of expatriate workers and immigration fair and cultural function.
