Bangladesh BankBangladesh has sought specific information from Philippines over the identities and finances of the perpetrators of the Bangladesh Bank reserve heist.
Philippines was asked for the information during the Dhaka-Manila Foreign Officer consultation at the state guest house on Tuesday (Dec 3).
“We need the information for the charge sheet of the case,” said Masud bin Momen, secretary (Asia Pacific) of the foreign ministry.
He added that they have been able to recover $ 16 million out if the $ 82 million taken by hackers. “The rest of the money has been laundered.”
Momen added that Philippines has assured extending their cooperation. “The information is with their judiciary from where they will give it to us.”
The secretary said that the bank through which the cyber heist took place has been slapped with a fine of $ 20 million by the Philippine banking regulators.
“We wanted the Philippines authorities to give us the same amount as compensation but they said that the fine imposed on the bank was done as per Filipino law and giving Bangladesh the money will create complications,” he said.
He added that it is a lengthy procedure since the lawsuits are continuing in New York and Manila.
