Online news portal registration starts next week: Minister

PHOTO/BSSThe process of registering online news portals will start in December, says Information Minister Hasan Mahmud before adding that the government will take measures against unregistered outlets.
“The home ministry has scrutinized the documents of several hundred online news portals ... The government will give registration to online news portals from next week after examining the related papers,” BSS quoted him saying on Monday (Dec 2).
The government has received a total of 3,595 application for registration, which were forwarded to the home ministry for verification, the minister told a media call at his Secretariat offices.
"Later, we held a meeting with the home, telecom and ICT ministries and urged the home ministry for expediting investigation,” he added.
In future, online media outlets will have to go through a proper registration process before launching operations, said the information minister.
He also said discipline has been established in the electronic media sector following the government’s different steps. The government will take actions if there is any irregularity in the sector, he added.
Responding to a query at the media call, Minister Hasan said that several newspapers, online news portals and television channels have taken to the internet for showing video contents. which is also not acceptable.
“We are working to bring those media in order,” he added.
