Khorshed Alam drives a passenger bus in Dhaka, Bangladesh, August 7, 2018. REUTERSTransport workers (drivers and assistants) will be given appointment letters from the employers from now onwards.
The decision was reached during a meeting of a Parliamentary panel with the representatives of both transport owners and workers on Tuesday (Nov 26).
During the meeting both the workers and employers blamed each other regarding appointment letters.
Workers alleged that the owners are reluctant to issue letters as they don’t want to bear the responsibility if the transport gets into an accident.
Meanwhile, owners said that workers are unwilling to take appointment letters as they switch workplaces often.
Mujibul Haque Chunnu who heads the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Labour and Employment said that provisions for appointment letters to be issued.
“For a route permit of a transport, the appointment letter has to be included. But it’s not being implemented due to reluctance on both the workers’ and owners’ side,” he said.
He said that both sides have agreed on the issue and the labour wing has been directed to officially write to both parties regarding the matter.
