Ban Ki-moon calls for political solution to Rohingya crisis

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visited a Rohingya makeshift camp in Cox`s Bazar along with Marshal Island President Dr Hilda Heine and World Bank CEO Dr Kristaline Georgieva. FOCUS BANGLAThe crisis involving the over 1 million Rohingyas who fled to Bangladesh for Myanmar requires a political solution, says former UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.

His remarks came on Saturday (Nov 23) while speaking to the media in Dhaka after a meeting with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, reports UNB.

"There should be a political solution," he was quoted by the news agency.

Lauding Bangladesh for sheltering the Rohingyas, Ban sought continued support for Rohingyas from UN agencies and humanitarian organisations.

On his visit to camps in Cox's Bazar during his last visit to Bangladesh, he said, "It was hard to describe."

The former UN chief highly commended Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's strong commitment in dealing with all global challenges including climate change, implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), empowering women and youth, said the UNB report.

Emphasising global solution to these global challenges, he said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

Ban said he has been telling across the world about the very successful story of Bangladesh in climate adaptation.  "Bangladesh is doing excellent."

In his second visit this year, the former UN chief arrived Dhaka late on Friday, He is scheduled to attend the 13th convocation of Brac University on Saturday before leaving later the same day.

In July, Ban attended the ‘Dhaka Meeting of the Global Commission on Adaptation’ held in the capital.
