Submarine cable repairs to disrupt internet speedInternet speed in Bangladesh will be slower than usual for four days due to repairs on the first submarine cable SEA-ME-WE-4.
Repairs on the first submarine cable will begin on Jul 25 and are expected to finish on Jul 30.
Internet users across Bangladesh will experience slow internet during these days. Users, however, will not face major problem as the second submarine cable SEA-ME-WE-5 and six terrestrial links will supply bandwidth, said people familiar with the matter.
“International voice and data services will not be disrupted during this period due to alternative services,” said a press statement of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited.
“Daily browsing of internet including emailing, visiting social media and newspaper website are likely to face little disruption while online gaming, transaction, video streaming may be hit hard,” Emdadul Haque of the ISP Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) told Bangla Tribune.
Bangladesh was connected to the SEA-ME-WE-4 in 2005, which provided 250 gigabits per second of bandwidth.
In 2017, the country started to get approximately 1,500 Gigabytes per second of speed after getting connected to SEA-ME-WE-5, the second submarine cable.
