Singapore to raise Rohingya issue in ASEAN summit

Singapore Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan with M Faruk Khan, MP, Nurul Islam Nahid, MP and Kazi Nabil Ahmed,MP on Oct 24, 2019.Singapore will continue to support Bangladesh over the Rohingya issue and willing to discuss it in the next ASEAN summit in Bangkok.
It was mentioned by Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan when a parliamentary delegation met him at his office on Thursday.
Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Muhammad Faruk Khan led the delegation and he was accompanied by two lawmakers - Nurul Islam Nahid and Kazi Nabil Ahmed.
Seeking support from Singapore, Faruk Khan urged the foreign minister to form an opinion for early repatriation of the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh and to discuss issues related to the repatriation.
A foreign ministry press release said tt the outset, the Singapore foreign minister congratulated Awami League government for the landslide victory in the last national election.
Faruk Khan explained the reasons behind the enormous popularity are the growing economy of Bangladesh and various development initiatives taken by this government.
The minister appreciated Bangladesh’s efforts for providing best possible humanitarian assistance despite numerous challenges and constraints Bangladesh has.
Later, various aspects and challenges concerning the repatriation of the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals were discussed at length.
The parliamentary delegation is now in Singapore on a four-day visit and will leave Singapore on Oct 27.
