With the election due late this year, the government is going to sit with the 64 districts’ deputy commissioners (DC) as the annual conference of DCs will kick off on Jul 24.
Like every year, the Cabinet Division has organized the three-day event in the city. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the programme.
“As the DCs are the state’s policy implementing officials on the field the government exchanges views with them for different reasons for at least once a year,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told Bangla Tribune.
Elaborating on the content of the conference, the senior secretary said, “Not only the government gives them instructions the DCs also inform the government of their demands and problems, which they face on the field.”
These interactions help to build a bridge between the government and its high officials on the field, according to Alam.
Sources at the Cabinet said that the government is likely to give a set of instructions to the DCs. It includes speeding up the implementation of the government’s development projects, taking necessary steps to increase people’s involvement against militancy, and ensuring hassle-free public services.
The DCs may get specific directives on the government’s stern anti-drug stance including its zero tolerance to drugs, according to the sources.
The DCs, however, have always been claiming that they face problems in conducting mobile courts due to the manpower shortage in police forces.
This issue may get focus in the upcoming conference, according to sources at Home Ministry.
Special instructions on running mobile courts will be given too.
Last year, the DCs placed 349 proposals in their conference – 150 short-term, 132 mid-term and 147 long-term. A total of 429 decisions were taken in the 2017 DCs’ conference.
