Reiterating her vow to crackdown on illicit activities in universities, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has warned that the government will not tolerate any crime on campus.
“The message is very clear. We’ll never tolerate any crime on campus … never did that in past and won’t do either in the future,” BSS quoted her saying on Saturday (Oct 12).
Her comments came while addressing the council of Mohila Sramik League, a party affiliate, amidst widespread protests and criticism over the killing of a BUET student allegedly by leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
Hasina said that her administration will take actions against anyone committing crime irrespective of their political affiliations.“Academic atmosphere in all educational institutions must be maintained."
The prime minister also questioned the justification of the continued protests by students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) students after the vice-chancellor accepted their demands.
“The BUET vice-chancellor has accepted the 10-point demand of the students following the murder. After that the students have said they’ll continue their movement … I don’t know what could be its rationality after fulfilment of their demand?”, the state news agency quoted her saying.
