UN recognises Bangladesh as 3rd top fish producing nation

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda was addressing a media briefing on Wednesday (July 18).Bangladesh is now the third top fish producing county of the world after China and India, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
“As per the FAO’s latest report in 2018, Bangladesh is now 3rd among the aquaculture fish producing countries in the world after China and India,” Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda told a media briefing on Wednesday, reports BSS.
Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in fish production with the per capita fish consumption standing 62.58 grams, Chanda said citing figures by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
Bangladesh is observing its annual National Fisheries Week from Wednesday with a view to maintain the sector’s growth.
Fisheries production reached to 4.13 million tonnes in 2016-17 fiscal surpassing the target of was 4.05 million tonnes, said the minister.
The government will set up 20 marine surveillance check-post, provide license to all fishing trawlers and vessel within 2030, bring at least half a million fishermen families under social security programme, recognize fishing ground within 2030, set up model village at the coastal region and extension of sea and costal fisheries programme, the minister noted.
