State minister for finance MA Mannan is addressing in the meeting.State minister for finance, MA Mannan has said that if evidence surfaces of Bangladesh Bank’s negligence in safeguarding people’s assets then the government must take responsibility.
He made the observations Wednesday afternoon while talking to the media.
The state minister said: “though I was horrified by the news, the enormity of the problem is less than how it was presented in the media.”
The gold is in pristine order, he observed and added: “there can easily be a misunderstanding between 40 and 80 carats.”
He highlighted that, in the past, measurement was done using archaic methods while now it’s done using sophisticated equipment.
After the finance minister comes back, all aspects will be looked into, assured the state minister.

Acknowledging that there are bureaucratic oversights, he assured that the entire system will be reviewed.
Punitive measures will be taken if the slightest negligence is detected, the minister said and did not rule out the possibility of a probe body.
He further added that he did not meet the prime minister but had a discussion with the chief secretary.
On Tuesday, at a press conference, executive director of Bangladesh Bank, Rabiul Hasan, said: “the Bangladesh Bank has confirmed that there isn’t any discrepancy in the gold reserve.”
Some complications rose during the recording process, he observed. The central bank has six layers of security; even the governor needs special permission to enter the vaults.
There are some language related flaws in the recording system, he reassured.
“If something is recorded as 18 carat instead of 22 then it was due to two separate measurements by different machines.”
