Transport owners and workers had some reservations about the law passed in Parliament in 2018, so it will be sent back to parliament for further amendments.

The meeting of the committee chaired by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan was held at the home ministry on Wednesday (Sept 25) and some decisions were taken. It was decided that if anyone was killed in a motor accident, it would be deemed a crime under the 1860 penal code.

In an earlier meeting on Sept 4, it was decided that if anyone died because of reckless driving then the driver would face five year's imprisonment and a Tk 500,000 fine.

Regarding the issue of bail and compromise, the recommendation was that apart from crimes committed under section 105, others would be bailable. If provisions 1 and 2 of section 13 were breached then those would be deemed a crime and would attract a fine of up to TK 10,000.

The home minister said that the committee has evaluated road security laws of neighbouring countries.

“We have assessed the provisions for punishments, plus the laws in other countries. Based on these, we will take a final decision; our main aim is to find out the problem areas in implementing laws,” said the home minister.
