Bangladesh has sought Japan’s support to construct a new railway bridge over River Jamuna.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam made the request to his Japanese counterpart Toshiko Abe on Wednesday (Sept 4) at Malé on the sidelines of the 4th Indian Ocean Conference.
“The Japanese side reassured their support and cooperation to build the railway bridge over Jamuna,” said a ministry statement on Wednesday.
Abe expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina meeting the family members of the Japanese victims of the Holey Artisan attack during her visit to Japan last May.
She mentioned that Japan is particularly happy that Bangladesh has decided to name metro rail stations after the names of the victims.
Both sides agreed on timely implementation of ODA, the statement said.
Alam updated Toshiko on the latest status of over one million Rohingyas being sheltered by Bangladesh, including the rising concerns about security at the camps.
He underscored that Bangladesh needs Japan’s support for the safe and dignified repatriation of the to Myanmar and to start moving them to Bhashan Chor in the meantime.
